Choose the rug size around the furniture layout. Living room rugs should anchor the seating area, while dining rugs need enough room for chairs to slide back.

Let the rug repeat one color, texture, or mood from the furniture and art. A rug can be quiet and grounding or become the pattern that ties the room together.

If the room layout is changing, choose the rug early because it sets the footprint. If furniture is already fixed, measure around those pieces before narrowing rug size.
