Mirror Size Guide: Choosing the Right Size for Your Space

Mirrors can amplify light and visually enlarge your room, but sizing them correctly makes all the difference. Here’s how to pick the right mirror size for common placements:

  • Over a console or mantel: Choose a mirror that is roughly two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the furniture. This keeps the proportions balanced while leaving a small border on each side.
  • Above a sofa: Large mirrors can make a statement. Aim for a mirror that is at least half the width of the sofa and hang it 4‑6 inches above the top to avoid awkward gaps.
  • Entryways and narrow halls: Vertical mirrors help elongate smaller spaces. A tall mirror measuring 24–36 inches wide and 48–60 inches high will give you a full view without overwhelming the wall.
  • Bathroom vanities: Pair single vanities with mirrors that are 1‑2 inches narrower than the vanity on each side. For double vanities, hang two mirrors or one long mirror to match the width of the sink area.
  • Floor mirrors: Leaning floor mirrors should be at least 60 inches tall so they provide a head‑to‑toe reflection. Position them where they reflect natural light to brighten the room.

General tips:

  • Don’t be afraid to go big; larger mirrors make small rooms appear more spacious.
  • When grouping multiple mirrors, treat them like a gallery wall—keep 2‑3 inches between frames and align their center lines.
  • Use painter’s tape to mark out sizes on the wall before buying to visualize the scale.

Choose a mirror that complements your furniture and architecture. If you love a bold, oversized piece, make it the focal point. For subtle elegance, select a mirror that harmonizes with your room’s finishes and shapes.
