Lighting Guide: Choosing Sconces, Chandeliers & Pendants

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood and functionality of a room. A well‑designed lighting plan layers ambient, task and accent light to create depth and flexibility. Start with ambient (general) lighting that fills the space—this can be achieved with ceiling‑mounted fixtures or a central chandelier. Add task lighting to illuminate work areas like kitchen counters, reading nooks and desks. Finally, use accent lighting to highlight artwork, architectural features or create a cozy atmosphere.

Sconces: Wall sconces are versatile fixtures that add soft, directional light and free up table space. Mount sconces roughly 60 inches from the floor so the light source sits at eye level. In hallways or living rooms, space multiple sconces about 6‑8 feet apart for even coverage. In bathrooms, place sconces on either side of a mirror for flattering, shadow‑free illumination.

Chandeliers: A chandelier makes a statement as the focal point of dining rooms, foyers or bedrooms. To choose the right size, add your room’s length and width (in feet) and convert that total to inches—that number is a good starting diameter for the fixture. For dining tables, select a chandelier that is about one half to two thirds the table’s width and hang it 30–36 inches above the tabletop. Dimmer switches are essential to adjust brightness for different occasions.

Pendants: Pendant lights work well over kitchen islands, dining areas and bedside tables. Hang single pendants so the bottom sits 30–36 inches above surfaces, or mount a series of smaller pendants spaced evenly (usually 24–30 inches apart) to avoid overcrowding. For high ceilings, consider a multi‑light pendant or staggered cluster to fill vertical space.

General tips: Always consider ceiling height and the scale of your furniture when selecting fixtures. Mix metals and finishes thoughtfully to tie into other hardware and accents in the room. Install dimmers wherever possible to change the mood and save energy. With the right combination of sconces, chandeliers and pendants, you can layer light effectively and make every space in your home both beautiful and functional.
